RED STONE

THE BRAND

Our design products are packaged in one company called “Rød Stein,” or simply, the “R.” Rød means “red” and represents the warmth of the heated stone furniture, the contrast between our lit trail markers to the surroundings, and a reference to Turlag’s traditional red color. Stein means “stone” and represents stability, nature, and reminds hikers of the historical Norwegian “varde.” Rød Stein is a division of the Turlag and is seen as its little brother. Turlag is intended for experience hikers, and “R” is designed for amateurs.

SHELTER

As a hiker travels further from the city center, their needs increase. Our vision is that rest stops along the trails would reflect this. Shelters closer to the starting point would be simpler, while shelters further away would have space for campfires, more seating, elevate floorboards, and areas to hang coats. The furniture in these shelters would be made of heated stones, powered by solar energy. The design of these structure is supposed to complement the nature. “Made by humans, owned by nature.”

  LIGHTING SYSTEM

Members of our target group were bothered by the lack of lights along Norwegian trails. We have developed a system of red lights built into “varde” trail markers. Rød Stein users wear wristbands with electronic sensors to help guide them along their trip, and when a “varde” light senses a nearby hiker, it will illuminate.

TREK TRACKER

Our target group said that they often found it easy to get lost while hiking. “R” trailmarkers are styled like traditional varde, but contain electronic sensors. “Trek Tracker” is a digital wristwatch that recognizes these signals and points hikers in the direction of their next checkpoint. It also shows users how far they are from the next trailmarker, and how many other “R” hikers are stopped there. This encourages people to use the rest stops as points of social connection.

 FLØYEN KIOSK

Since our target group often hikes Fløyen but not much further, we saw this area as the starting point for many other hikes, and as a great place to advertise. We are proposing a highly interactive, large red stone that has projections of various maps and information. It is essentially a large light up touch screen that is warm to the touch. This is also a vending machine where you can purchse Trek Tracker wristwatches.

  PROMOTION

To spread awareness of our new company, we want to start a guerilla advertising campaign with stenciled stones. The stones say things like “bring me back to nature” and “I am lost, take me back to the mountains.” They also show our website and logo. These stones would be placed in random people’s pockets throughout the city to get them interested in exploring the mountains. Also, we would like to sell T-shirts with comical phrases about hiking on them to unite our target group and advertise the brand.

TARGET GROUP

We saw a need for Rød Stein because, after interviewing many locals, there seems to be a large group of “occasional hikers” who are hesitant to go on longer trips. Their key concerns were that rest areas weren’t comfortable, there was no lighting system, and it was hard to find trail markers. Our intention was to design products that engage our target group, but work in harmony with nature and the already-existing Turlag system. We want to make hiking exciting and safe for amateurs, without irritating experienced hikers.
